When selecting stone slabs for interiors, there are many stunning options, each with unique properties and benefits. As an interior designer, I’ve worked with various stones, and a few of my favorites stand out for their versatility, durability, and aesthetic appeal.

Here’s a breakdown of my go-to stones and how they can elevate different spaces in your home:

Quartzite: The Marble-Like Beauty with Granite Durability

Quartzite has quickly become one of my favorite materials due to its stunning veining, which closely resembles marble while offering the strength and durability of granite. It’s perfect for those who love the look of marble but need a more resilient stone. While quartzite can be more absorbent than granite, making it prone to water spots (though these typically dry up over time), its durability and striking appearance make it worth considering. We’re currently installing Elysium Quartzite in our Morrison Build, and the veining and richness of this stone make it an ideal choice for statement surfaces like countertops and backsplashes. Additionally, Infinity White Quartzite is a beautiful option for areas like backsplashes with its distinct veining that varies per slab. When using Infinity White, it’s essential to consider how the veining interacts with other design elements like cabinetry and shelving, but the result is a visually stunning and dynamic surface.

Granite: Timeless, Low-Maintenance, and Budget-Friendly

Granite has been a staple in kitchens and bathrooms for years, and for good reason. It’s highly durable, easy to maintain, and comes in various colors and patterns. I love using granite because it’s cost-effective while still offering a luxurious look. It requires sealing, but even without it, granite can still withstand daily wear. We often opt for leathered granite, which provides a tactile, textured surface highlighting the stone's natural veining. Nocturnal Granite, honed for a matte finish, is an excellent example of this updated look, providing a sleek and modern alternative to polished granite.

Quartz: The Durable, Low-Maintenance Alternative

Quartz is a man-made material that combines the beauty of natural stone with the practicality of being low-maintenance. It often mimics the look of marble, making it a popular choice for spaces like bathrooms and kitchens where clients desire the aesthetic of marble but don’t want to deal with the upkeep. I wouldn’t say it’s one of my favorites, but Calacatta Lustrous from Francini was an economical choice that didn’t sacrifice style. It offers the timeless beauty of marble without the high maintenance.

Porcelain: Sleek, Durable, and Perfect for Walls

Porcelain is a thin, sleek material that offers a modern look but requires careful handling. I typically use porcelain for wall applications rather than countertops, as it’s more prone to chipping on edges if used on a countertop surface. I love the color and veining of Calacatta Borghini from Francini, which resembles marble but is more affordable and easier to clean. I actually wrote about my love for this material in 2020, when I was waiting for the perfect project to use it in. (You can read that blog post here). We’ve now used porcelain in steam showers and other wall installations, and its durability and beauty make it an excellent choice for high-moisture areas.

Choosing the right stone for your space goes beyond just its looks—it’s about finding the perfect balance between beauty and functionality. From the stunning veining of quartzite to the timeless durability of granite and the low-maintenance benefits of quartz and porcelain, each of these natural stones has something special to offer. The right stone will not only elevate the look of your space but will also serve your lifestyle needs.

These stones, natural and man-made, will help you achieve a beautiful and functional space that suits your needs perfectly.
