Design Tips For Back To School Study Areas

We have officially kicked off the 2024-2025 school year! Are your kids already bringing home a backpack full of homework? As interior designers, we know that a good work/study space at home can help your child stay focused and organized.

Whether you have a whole room to dedicate as a study zone or just a small corner, smart design can make any space work! For this project in Franktown, we created a spacious and functional study area in what might have otherwise turned into an under-utilized hallway.

In this article, we’ll share a few simple tips to create a fun and productive study area that will serve your kids for years to come.

  1. Storage

A great study area is all about storage. Each child should likely have their own drawer to keep things separate. Then, there should be ample additional storage for all of the shared school supplies, crafts, and more.

For our client in Franktown, we designed each child’s individual drawer right at their specific seat, then flanked the whole desk with deeper drawers that can hold any and everything they might need as they grow.

  1. Lighting

A productive workspace will always have a mixture of task light, ambient light, and natural light. This will allow for focused work at any time of day or night!

Task lighting should be flexible, like the pendants above which could be adjusted to different heights - or a desk lamp that can follow your child as they work on different projects. Natural lighting from windows, sky lights, and other features should have the option to be controlled with window treatments if necessary.

  1. Power

Today, a study area is only as successful as outlets allow! Our kids have more devices than ever before, so it is important that they can conveniently access as many power sources as possible. And you will be much happier if the cords, converters, and other tech accessories are out of sight!

We often design grommets in desks and table tops to allow access to outlets below in a way that is streamlined and friendly to the eye.

  1. Style

Homework isn’t always fun… But that doesn’t mean that your kids’ homework area can’t be. We always encourage the use of color to make the space more engaging. Functional accessories like chalk boards, magnet boards, and bulletin boards allow your family to decorate the space with their own work, art, photos, accomplishments, and more!

With these 4 simple tips, you can create a back to school study area that encourages your kids’ best work this school year and beyond.
